Everyone should become an independent learner. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student needing coaching or just some guidance, regardless of age, your teacher should meet you there

Customized Private Voice/Piano Lessons

At the height of her teaching career, Jessica was working with over 100 students a week, in private lesson and group settings, teaching various styles and instruments, participating and hosting piano, voice, and songwriter festivals, competitions, recitals, auditions, open mics, etc.

Starting in 2020, she began teaching completely online, opening up to in-home lessons a few years later. As of July 2025 she is thrilled to join the voice faculty at Music Institute of Chicago, with in-person lessons available at the Evanston IL campus!

About Lessons

Lessons are individualized for each student, catering to the student’s learning and communication style. There are many different types of private lessons available, and most of these can be done in groups as well!

Here are some of the topics for lessons:
Vocal technique (overall vocal health, body alignment, breathing, tone, releasing tension, vocal flexibility, range development, articulation, dynamics/expression, etc.) in various styles (classical and contemporary styles, such as musical theatre, jazz, pop)
Sight-singing
Improvisation
Songwriting/Arranging
Audition Prep
Performance, artistry/expression
Piano for Vocalists
Music Theory (what you really need to know)
Chord-Reading
Range-testing (for singers)
Rep review building session and assessment

Private lessons are the best way to improve your skills as a musician. If you are serious about getting to the next level, whether it be through technique, musicianship, overall performance, creativity—or maybe you’re just a little shy and only want to sing in front of one person for a while—one-on-one instruction is the best thing for you.

That said, group classes and collaborative projects are fun, enriching, and rewarding (emotionally and educationally) too! Group classes have been offered in music theory, vocal jazz improvisation, group singing, songwriting/analysis, musical theatre ‘in the round’, and more. If you are interested in joining a class or want to put something together with a small group of your friends/music buddies, please email me at jessica@jessicadeskinmusic.com for more info.

Vocalists: for age 13 and older, it is highly recommended that you have at least 45-minute lessons due to the nature of vocal technique study and the time it takes to internalize these lessons and feel good about the week of practice.
